摘要	PURPOSE:To manufacture a semiconductor laser provided with a primary active section formed of GaAlAs material by a method wherein an applied current constricting means is formed without introducing crystal defects into the primary active section formed of GaAlAs material. CONSTITUTION:The following are continuously laminated on a substrate 11 through a liquid phase epitaxial growth method: a first clad layer 12; an active layer 13; a second clad layer 14; a first cap layer 15; and a constriction layer 16. Next, the constriction layer 16 is partially removed in a direction vertical to the face of this paper through an etching technique to form an opening 17. Then, a second cap layer 18 is formed on the surface of the first cap layer 15 exposed by boring the opening 17. Next, a first electrode brought into ohmic contact with the second cap layer 18 and a second electrode brought into ohmic contact with the rear side of the substrate 11 are formed. When a normal bias is applied between the first and the second electrode, the constriction layer 16 becomes substantially a high resistive layer and an applied current is concentrated on the active layer just below the second cap layer 18 as the cap layer 16 is low in carrier concentration, so that laser rays of a single mode are made to oscillate in the active layer.
