摘要PURPOSE:To enable a high gradation image to be recorded at high speed by a method wherein a minimum drive current is established at a value slightly larger than threshold current, and a semiconductor laser beam is directly modulated. CONSTITUTION:For a light emission level command signal Vref by a table 12 and D/A converter 13, one among values of dividing a space between a minimum value Vref1 and a maximum value Vref2 at an equal interval is so set as to be taken according to an image signal S Then, the minimum value Vref1, i.e., a value for giving minimum drive current Imin to a semiconductor laser 17 is so established that a value slightly larger than threshold current Ith is taken as the minimum drive current Imin. Therefore, even though natural emission light is included in a light beam 18 incident to an optical wavelength conversion element 30, since a wavelength of the light beam 18 is not converted and is cut with a filter 24, intensity of a light beam 18'' emitted from the light wavelength conversion element 30 basically corresponds to only intensity of a laser beam emitted from the semiconductor laser 17.
