摘要1466486 Light guide termination with source and detector CORNING GLASS WORKS 3 Jan 1975 [7 Jan 1974] 179/75 Heading G1A Such a termination, arranged to be positioned in axial alignment with the end of waveguide bundle 10, comprises optical mixer 18 with face 16 adjacent said end and a solid state detector 34 near a second face 20 edge-emitting solid state light source 32 on the side of detector 34 away from mixer 18 and reflecting surface 48 so disposed as to reflect light from source 32 to face 20. Ferrule 12 of say brass or glass maintains the ends of waveguides 11 in parallel alignment and has similar grinding characteristics to them, Rod 18 is preferably cylindrical with its ends perpendicular to its axis and clad with layer 22 of lower refractive index. Support member 24 is secured to ferrule 12 by means 26. Contact 36 supported by housing 38 serves as heat sink for double heterojunction LOC laser diode 32 operating below the lasing threshold as an incoherent emitter. Flying lead 40 is the other connection. Electrical connection to p-i-n or avalanche photo- diode 34 is by beam lead 42 and flying lead 44. All leads are insulated. Parabolic surface 48 which collimates the light from source 32 is formed by depositing silver, or chromium, or surface 46 is polished. Detector 34 is held by adhesive filling 54 of silicon fluid or ethyl-cyanacrylate epoxy or methyl siloxane. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the surface of adhesive filling is flat and contacts the second end face of rod (18'), the reflecting surface is conical and the detector is mounted on an insulating layer on source 32. The adhesive filling may be omitted and the mixer rod end disposed on the detector.
