A kind of Erbium-Ytterbium ions codoped lead silicate laser glass was prepared by conventional high
temperature melt-quenching method.Through measuring the absorption spectrum and refractive index of the sample,
the emission cross section and fluorence lifetime of Er3+:4I13/2→4I15/2 based on McCumber theory and Judd-Ofelt
theory was stimulated. The results indicate that the glass has a large emission cross section as 8.62×10-21 cm2 at 1536
nm, and is as long as 11.32 ms(while the measured value is 9.26 ms). The fluorescence spectrum of the sample was
measured. It is proved that this glass has a strong fluorescence peak around 1536 nm,which fluorescence linewidth is
about 46.5 nm.There also has a upconversion fluorescence around 580nm,which result from the Er3+:4S3/2→4I15/2
transition.Considering the long fluorence lifetime, large emission cross section and weak upconversion fluorescence
of the sample, the glass will be a excellent material for high energy pulse fiber laser and amplifications.
