摘要An automatic power control system for automatic power control of a semiconductor optical amplifier 10 arranged to amplify a signal has an automatic power control loop 24. This provides automatic power control of the power of the amplified signal for maintaining the power of the amplified signal in the output from the semiconductor optical amplifier 10 at a desired level. An optical power detector means preferably, a photodiode 25 detects the output power of the semiconductor optical amplifier 10. There is a means for deriving a measure of the drive current of the semiconductor optical amplifier 10. The automatic power control loop 24, uses both the detected output power of the semiconductor optical amplifier 10 and the detected drive current. Alternatively, the automatic power control loop (figure 10, 20) uses only the detected output power of the semiconductor optical amplifier. The automatic power control loop 24 may compensate for an estimated level of amplified spontaneous emission in the detected output power using stored characteristics of the semiconductor optical amplifier. The automatic power control system may be used to control semiconductor optical amplified in a reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer for a plurality of channels (figure 13).
