摘要 | An apparatus for controlling the spatial beam profile (1) of laser radiation (2), which apparatus comprises a laser (3) and a resonant fibre (4), wherein: the laser (3) is connected to the resonant fibre (4); the resonant fibre (4) comprises a first core (5), a cladding (6) and a waveguide structure (7); the first core (5) supports a fundamental mode (8) at a first wavelength (9) and at a second wavelength (10); the waveguide structure (7) supports a mode (13) at the first wavelength (9) and at the second wavelength (10); the waveguide structure (7) is positioned such that the fundamental mode (8) supported by the first core (5) overlaps the waveguide structure (7) at the first wavelength (9); the waveguide structure (7) is such that the fundamental mode (8) couples between the first core (5) and the waveguide structure (7) at the first wavelength (9); the resonant fibre 4 is defined by a length (11); the length (11) is such that the proportion of the laser radiation (2) that is emitted from the first core (5) compared to the laser radiation (2) emitted from the waveguide structure (7) is different at the first wavelength (9) compared to the second wavelength (10); the spatial beam profile (1) of the laser radiation (2) is determined by the proportion of the laser radiation (2) that is emitted from the first core (5); the laser (3) is selected such that its output wavelength (12) is able to be changed from the first wavelength (9) to the second wavelength (10), thereby enabling the spatial beam profile (1) to be controlled. |

主权项 | Apparatus for controlling the spatial beam profile of laser radiation, which apparatus comprises a laser and a resonant fibre, wherein: • the laser is connected to the resonant fibre; • the resonant fibre comprises a first core, a cladding and a waveguide structure; • the first core supports a fundamental mode at a first wavelength and at a second wavelength; • the waveguide structure supports a mode at the first wavelength and at the second wavelength; • the waveguide structure is positioned such that the fundamental mode supported by the first core overlaps the waveguide structure at the first wavelength; • the waveguide structure is such that the fundamental mode couples between the first core and the waveguide structure at the first wavelength; • the resonant fibre is defined by a length; • the length is such that the proportion of laser radiation that is emitted from the first core compared to the laser radiation emitted from the waveguide structure is different at the first wavelength compared to the second wavelength; • the spatial beam profile of the laser radiation is determined by the proportion of the laser radiation that is emitted from the first core; and • the laser is such that its output wavelength is able to be changed from the first wavelength to the second wavelength, thereby enabling the spatial beam profile to be controlled. |
